Bundels is a Grade 2 Listed irregular shaped cob cottage circa 1633, located within Sidbury Conservation Area and East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In its nature the existing cottage lacked the space needed for a growing family so the brief was to design a new kitchen extension to replace the temporary kitchen inherited with the property.
The challenge was to extend in such a way as to respect the historic beauty of the existing cottage and its wider context, whilst satisfying the growing needs of a family. Constrained by the Listed nature of the building, along with the need to retain the existing landing window and small feature window within the central dining area, the extension took the form of a simple rectangle with a shallow pitched roof.
The extension is finished in facing brickwork, closely matched to the existing random areas of brickwork around the existing cottage. Large glazed sliding doors and patent glazing within the roof flood the new kitchen with daylight. The roof is finished in natural zinc in standing seam design with matching zinc rainwater gutters and downpipes.
Having a link to the garden was an important element of the design, giving that yearned for inside-outside feel, in a world where we spend hours at our desks. This new modern kitchen has given a new lease of life to the central family hub of this home and despite being small in nature, it is mighty in its impact.
